1 sprint per set
How It Works
- Mark out a straight 40m sprint lane. Start from a relaxed standing position behind the line. Accelerate hard from the start, continue building speed and transition into an upright high-speed position. Sprint through the full 40m without slowing down.
Match Situation
You rarely get enough space during normal football training to reach and hold your highest running speed for long. The extra distance gives you more time to move beyond acceleration and into high-speed running. In a recent study of elite football players, 40m sprinting produced more running above 95% of individual maximum speed than 30m sprinting. .Which means, that if you want to increase your top speed, you need to regularly practise maximal 40m sprints.
Coaching Cues
- Accelerate hard without forcing your posture upright too early.
- Stay tall and relaxed as you reach high speed.
- Keep your stride powerful and efficient.
- Maintain your speed through the finish.
