40 (10 far post, 10 near post per foot)
This exercise builds: 40 Shots
How It Works
- Place one cone 1 metre inside each goalpost. These cones mark the target areas you should aim for.
- Set up an open triangle of cones in front of the penalty spot, with the point of the triangle facing you and the open side towards the penalty spot.
- Start with the ball at the point of the triangle.
- Take a quick touch diagonally forward and to the side, moving the ball away from the imaginary defender in front of you.
- As soon as the ball passes the final cone, finish immediately and aim for the target area.
- Complete 10 shots towards the far post, then 10 shots towards the near post.
- Switch feet and repeat: 10 shots towards the far post and 10 towards the near post.
Match Situation
Imagine a defender directly in front of you. You take a quick touch to the side to move the ball just outside their reach. The moment the defender can no longer block or reach the ball, you need to finish immediately. The quicker you can create that small window and get your shot away, the harder you are to defend.
Coaching Cues
- Quick first touch: Push the ball far enough to create space, but keep it within shooting range.
- Shoot immediately: As soon as the ball passes the final cone, get your shot away as quickly as possible.
- Choose the right finish: Use the inside of the foot when finishing towards the near-post target and the laces/instep when finishing towards the far post.
Progression
- Reduce the space between the cones to make the shooting window smaller.
- Challenge yourself to maintain accuracy while increasing the speed of the entire movement.
