Reps
1 forward & back, then rest
How It Works
  1. Set up 6 gates, with 5 metres between each gate.
  2. Each gate should be 2 metres wide.
  3. Start with the ball at the first gate.
  4. Dribble through the entire lane at maximum speed, keeping the ball under control and staying inside the lane.
  5. Complete one maximum-speed run using your right foot only.
  6. Rest briefly, then complete one maximum-speed run using your left foot only.
  7. Rest for at least 30 seconds before repeating.
  8. The rest period is important β€” each run should be performed at absolute maximum intensity.
Match Situation

You’re always faster without the ball” is something we have all heard β€” but the gap can be reduced. Simple drills like this are used by professional players across all levels to develop their ability to control the ball at maximum speed. The more you train it, the faster you become with the ball. Being able to move at high speed while maintaining control is crucial for every position, because situations where you need to drive forward quickly with the ball happen constantly in matches. When that moment comes, you need to be able to run at full speed without losing control.

Coaching Cues
  • Push the ball into space: Take bigger touches when you have room, but keep the ball within your control.
  • Stay straight: Keep your touches controlled and avoid drifting outside the lane.
  • Run at maximum speed: The goal is to move as fast as possible while maintaining control of the ball.
Progression
  • Make the gates narrower to reduce the margin for error.
