This exercise builds: 180 Touches
How It Works
- Set up two cones approximately 5 metres apart.
- Start with the ball at one cone and dribble at speed towards the other.
- At the second cone, use the outside of your foot to turn 180° and change direction.
- Accelerate back towards the starting cone after the turn.
- At the starting cone, perform the same outside-foot turn and accelerate back.
- Continue alternating between the two cones.
Match Situation
Sometimes a defender gets so close that you cannot simply cut away or turn into open space. In these situations, an outside-foot turn allows you to turn your body, put your back between the defender and the ball, and use your body to protect possession. The key is to show the defender your back, shield the ball and turn away safely, giving you time and space to play forward again.
Coaching Cues
- Use your body to shield the ball as you turn, keeping yourself between the ball and the defender.
- Push the ball away with the outside of your foot and accelerate immediately after turning.
Progression
- Practise the turn with both feet so you can turn in either direction.
- Increase your speed as you become more comfortable while maintaining close control.
